Instead of…
“Orange is the New black,”
“Green is the new pink!”
Mental Health Awareness is represented by a green ribbon.
Please wear green and/or a green ribbon
and tell people our story when they ask you
what the color green and the green ribbon stands for.
Mental Health Awareness Month is also referred to as “Mental Health Month” and has been observed in May in the United States since 1949, reaching millions of people in the United States through the media, local events, and screenings.
World Mental Health Day is on October 10th and is a day for global mental health education, awareness and advocacy against social stigma. It was first celebrated in 1992 at the initiative of the World Federation for Mental Health, a global mental health organization with members and contacts in more than 150 countries.
Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW) is also known as Mental Health Awareness Week and happens during the first week in October. It was established in 1990 by the U.S. Congress in recognition of efforts by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) to educate and increase awareness about mental illness. NAMI and participants across the country are raising awareness of mental illness and fight stigma, provide support, educate the public and advocate for equal care and rights.
GREEN needs to be SEEN
We all need to start passing out green ribbons to everyone and start wearing green ribbons and just start wearing the color green more often. Green ribbons and the color green needs to be worn more and displayed and seen everywhere, during the month of May for Mental Health Awareness Month and during the first week in October for Mental Health Awareness Week and on October 10th for World Mental Health Day.
However, every day should be mental health awareness day, 365 days a year, 8784 hours a year, 525,600 minutes a year…
My dream is that one day the color green will be recognized for mental health awareness as much or more, and become as widespread as the color pink is for breast cancer.
I think it is time we start wearing green and seeing green everywhere.
Green needs to become your new favorite color.
When people ask you why you are wearing that green ribbon or just showing off your fabulous green color for the day tell them that green represents mental health awareness and start up a conversation and a dialog about mental illness.
Mental illness and mental health are subjects we all need to become much more aware of, educated about and more comfortable speaking about. No more need to whisper its name. Shhhh….. no more of that. Nope time to shout it out. Time to speak about it intelligently, compassionately and often.
Knowledge is power. Knowledge will help save lives, prevent suicides and reduce substance abuse.
Mental health needs to be part of everyone’s daily conversation. It is a great topic and we are great people. Start a conversation about mental illness and mental health and tell them the facts.
Tell them that the huge Opiate addiction and deaths related to Opiates is actually a substance abuse disorder which is a mental illness listed in the DSM-V manual of Psychiatric Illnesses. I wonder if Trump knows that as he brought up the Opiate crisis we are having in the United States yesterday. Someone needs to inform him of this. I am pretty sure he will not be reading my blog… hahaha…
Show off your green and
make it your new favorite color.

Hahaha…. yeah the word of the day should have been green What is wrong with them? Just kidding. Orange was most likely the color word because of Halloween coming up is my guess. Thank you for reading and thank you for your comment. It was a great one. Have a happy, healthy and fabulous day. Hugs, Sue
