David Cassidy is a Hero For Speaking About His Diagnosis of Dementia

David Cassidy was my first one and only true love and my heart is deeply saddened by the devastating news that he has dementia.

It is awesome he is speaking about Dementia, the diagnosis of dementia and living with dementia. Hopefully, this will help many people by increasing awareness about dementia.

Most people living with dementia do not accept their diagnosis until it becomes too late and then their symptoms become too severe causing them to not recall or remember things and become unaware of who they are.

David Cassidy Reveals He Is Battling Dementia: A Part of Me Always Knew This Was Coming He Tells People Magazine.

 David Cassidy is speaking out again about his battle with dementia.

David went public about his struggles after footage from a concert in Agoura Hills, Calif., showed him falling, slurring his speech and struggling to remember the lyrics to his music.

“Certainly, my dementia has contributed to the reason why I don’t want to go out and I don’t want to hear, ‘Well, he looked like he was drunk’… I wasn’t.”

This video broke my heart and is very sad and troubling when I saw how much David’s dementia has progressed. He was slurring his words, having trouble recalling words and remembering the song “I Think I Love You” which he has probably sung a million times. Also, his behaviors and speech were abnormal and not his typical or normal behaviors. Probably the saddest aspect of all of this is that he is beyond denial and has reached the point of being unaware of his inappropriate and abnormal behaviors. He even said in the video that he thought he was performing his best right now, which is so far from the truth. He has not been performing very well at all lately.

All brain disorders or brain disease of any kind are sad and can become very severe. Most people do not understand this.

David first noticed symptoms of the disease two and half years ago.

“When friends of yours or family members begin to tell you and say to you. ‘Remember? I just told you this two days ago’ and there’s no memory of it. That’s when I began to be very concerned,” he tells Dr. Phil McGraw.

David’s grandfather and mother both deteriorated and died from the complications related to dementia. David said one time he was called to get his mother because she was found wandering the neighborhood in her nightgown nearly naked (this also happened to a woman I took care of with dementia when I was doing home health care work).

After seeing his own mother “disappear” to the same disease, he told his 26-year-old son, Beau Cassidy… “I want you to promise me you’ll find a way to let me go. Don’t let me live like that.”

Dr. Phil asked David how his son replied to that and if his son agreed to do that and David, of course, shook his head sadly through his tears and said no.

Dr. Phil told David that is a big burden to ask of your son and David agreed wholeheartedly, saying that it is a great burden to put on anyone.

David Cassidy is speaking out again about his battle with dementia.

Sharing his story isn’t easy, but he hopes it helps others in similar situations.  As David explained to People last week…

“I was in denial, but a part of me always knew this was coming.

In the end, the only way I knew [my mom] recognized me is with one single tear that would drop from her eye every time I walked into the room.

I feared I would end up that way.”

As he steps out of the spotlight, the 66-year-old former teen idol said…

“I want to focus on what I am, who I am and how I’ve been without any distractions.

I want to love.

I want to enjoy life.”
